The 2010 Bath Peace Ceremony – We did it!

What a great turn out! The weather smiled upon us and over 250 people came to our event, in the beautiful setting of Parade Gardens last night.  The Chairman of Bath & North East Somerset Council, Cllr. Sarah Bevan, gave a powerful message in her opening speech and we were delighted that The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Bath, Councillor Shaun McGall was able to attend.

That we had two speakers who have lived through war talk about their own experiences – Abdullah Ali-Ahmadi from Afghanistan and Margaret Gibney from Belfast – gave the occasion an important gravitas and connection to the devastation and long-lasting impact of war. The feedback that we are getting is that the reality of war, juxtaposed with the celebration of Creativity, Unity and Peace and high-level audience participation, was a mix that was found to be both moving and profound.

    Listening to the two speakers, Margaret and Abdullah sharing their personal experiences of war in Belfast and Afghanistan, brought home to me the true reality of war and how important it is to further the work for peace in ourselves and our communities.
