Building the Candala for the Peace Ceremony & A Useful Tip

I could only complete the design for the Candala of Rebirth in situ once I arrived at the ASHA Centre, as it is important to take on board ‘the spirit of place’ and get a sense of the dimensions of the space and how the Candala sits within it.

The outer circumference of the Candala was made of a wide band of sand covered with compost. This combination of materials ensured that when lit candles were placed in the earth, they would stand firmly and not fall over –  a useful tip when dealing with fire, a lot of movement and audience interaction – the inspiration of ASHA Director, Adrian Locher!

I was given a wonderful team of young volunteers to help with a range of preparations for the PeaceCeremony and their care and attention to detail was second to none.

A particular thank you to Adrian, Sandy and Lucie for their sterling help. I look forward to working with you again in the future.
